Bus Driver Job Description

Purpose:                     The Bus Driver provides clean, safe, and reliable transportation to ensure

that students enjoy the full advantage of special education cooperative programs and activities. To accomplish these tasks the Bus Driver must work closely with the staff and administration of the school district and special education cooperative.

Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office.
  3. Valid CDL license with required endorsements.
  4. Meet all State requirements for Bus Drivers, including Defensive Driving and First Aid Certification.
  5. Successfully complete two-hour behind-the-wheel training.
  6. Complete required physical examination for Bus Drivers (after employment offer is made).
  7. Desire to continue career improvement.
    Essential Functions:
  8. Provide clean, safe, and reliable transportation to ensure that students enjoy the full advantage of special education cooperative programs and activities.
  9. Ensure that all activities conform to State school transportation guidelines.
  10. Communicate effectively with all members of the cooperative and community.
  11. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  12. Appropriately operate all vehicles and equipment as necessary.
  13. Support the value of an education.
  14. Support the philosophy and mission of the special education cooperative.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

 

  1. Occasionally requires move, lift, carry, pull or push medium toheavy work objects or materials. Medium work is defined as exerting 20 to 50 pounds up to heavy work which is defined as exerting 50 to 100 pounds.    
  2. Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  3. Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
  4. Requires climbing and balancing.
  5. Requires driving skills, including ability to operate vehicle at night.
  6. May require lengthy and overnight travel.
  7. Requires agility necessary to quickly and safely exit driver's seat and rear emergency door.
  8. Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.
  9. Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching.
  10. Must work in noisy, crowded, stressful environments.
  11. Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.
    General Responsibilities:
  12. Abide by all Kansas school transportation regulations. (Latest handbook authorized by K.S.A. 1976 Supp. 8-2009; effective July 1, 1992.)
  13. Provide safe and orderly transportation to and from school and school-related activities.
  14. Maintain assigned schedule.
  15. Transport only authorized students.
  16. Discharge students only at authorized stops.
  17. Maintain student discipline.
